Saneepa was founded in 2005 by Harshini Wikramanayake, an experienced yoga instructor teaching in the Iyengar tradition and a qualified Ayurvedic medical practitioner holding a master’s in science degree specialising in Ayurveda. Harshini has lived all over the world and devoted her life to promoting wellness and her passion and excitement for promoting a healthy mind, body and spirit infuses the Saneepa culture. Saneepa is the Singhalese language word for wellness (or lack of illness and disease) and Sinhala has its roots in Sanskrit and Pali, the ancient Indian sub-continent languages.

Ayurveda originated in fifth century India and is the Sanskrit term for “science of life”. Ayurveda is a holistic system of healthcare that diagnoses and treats the underlying causes of disease rather than providing symptomatic relief.  Ayurvedic clinical diagnosis assesses initial symptoms preceding illness - bringing to light potential health issues prior to the full onset of cardinal signs and symptoms.   Ayurveda is one of the branches of the Vedas, the ancient Indian texts, and is the sister science of Yoga. Ayurveda is considered by many scholars to be the oldest system of healing on our planet.

“Yoga”, derived from the Sanskrit root “yuj”, means to bind, join or direct ones concentration, attention and intention to commune with God – “union with the divine”. Ayurveda and Yoga form a continuum in which Ayurveda delivers wellness to the body, mind and emotions and Yoga offers stillness, serenity and equanimity to the body, mind and consciousness so that the Self can unite with God.
